HONOR KILLING OF AISHWARYA IN TAMIL NADU 2024
Context
In early January 2024, Aishwarya, a 19-year-old woman from the Kallar community in Tamil Nadu, was allegedly murdered by her own parents, Perumal and Roja, in an apparent honor killing. The motive stemmed from her inter-caste marriage to Naveen, a Dalit man, which her family vehemently opposed. The couple had eloped and married on December 31, 2023, after an 18-month relationship. They relocated to Veerapandi in Theni district, but Aishwarya's parents filed a missing persons report and managed to have her returned to their custody, despite her being a legal adult.
Police Investigation
After Aishwarya's sudden death and cremation on January 3, 2024, Naveen filed a police complaint on January 7, suspecting foul play. Investigations revealed that Aishwarya had been tortured and hanged by her parents. The swift cremation raised suspicions of an attempt to destroy evidence. A police officer, Murugaiyan, was suspended for his role in returning Aishwarya to her parents. Several family members were detained in connection with the case.
